Meetings and Workshops
at MacArthur Agro-ecology Research Center
(MAERC)
2000
February 24
IFAS Agro-Ecology Field Day.
The University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, is hosting an
agro-ecology field day for county commissioners and other elected officials throughout
Florida on Thursday, February 24, 2000, at the Buck Island Ranch in southern Highlands
County.
The Agro-Ecology Field Day will be a hands-on experiential day with activities
addressing issues of water quality, wetlands and uplands wildlife, cattle and forage
management, and other environmental issues such as global warming. Participants will have
the opportunity to do some of the same type field work as the scientists conducting
research on the ranch do including: checking small mammal traps, observing various species
living in water and wetlands, measuring CO2 in the soil, and measuring forage production
and cow body condition scoring.
Those persons wishing to learn more about the field day should
contact Jeffrey Mullahey, Associate Professor of Range Science, at the
Southwest Florida Research and Education Center, Immokalee, Florida.
