The Computer Information Center is a valuable resource that integrates and promotes Internet, Intranet, and Local and Wide Area Networking technologies into Archbold Biological Station activities. The National Science Foundation's Field Station and Marine Laboratory Program funded the implementation of this center by providing funds for the hardware and software technologies necessary for networking and for the physical renovation of attic space to store these components. The project began in October 1997 and was completed in May 1998.

The Computer Information Center, located above Archbold's Library, houses the Systems Administrator's office, rooms for the servers, repairs, and storage, and a computer lab (5 computers) with internet and network access for visiting scientists.

The Archbold Network consist of four main servers running Windows NT 4.0 which provides various services such as Web connections, remote access, e-mail, and all other essential network services. We also have one other Windows NT 4.0 server and two Snap Servers with a total of about 200 gigabytes disk space for data storage. Our fiber optic backbone further interconnect these servers to various labs (Bird, Vertebrate, Invertebrate, Plant and GIS) and offices (Main Building, Education and Rand Building), providing connection to about 40+ workstations.

A single segment with one Windows NT 4.0 server and 8 workstations at MAERC connects to the Station through a dedicated 512k Frame Relay (upgraded in 2001 from 56k). Other users such as staff at the Avon Park Air Force Range and several scientists use the dial-up remote access service to connect to the Station.
