LAND MANAGEMENT: A Map, "An Island of Pristine Habitat"

    Archbold Biological Station has some of the best examples of natural habitats remaining on central Florida's Lake Wales Ridge. Yet, as with other natural areas along the Ridge, the Station is increasingly an island of native habitat surrounded by citrus groves, cattle ranches, and housing developments (see map below), and this insularity brings at least three liabilities for land management; isolation from large-scale disturbances, smoke management during prescribed burns, and accelerated invasion by non-native species.
