Graduate Student ResearchGraduate students first conducted research at Archbold Biological Station in the mid-1950s and since the mid-1960s graduate students have been an important part of the research program at Archbold and also at MacArthur Agro-ecology Research Center (MAERC; founded in 1988). As of 2003, 122 graduate students (Master's 62, Ph.D. 60; including 2 Master's & 5 Ph.D. at MAERC) from 28 schools in the United States, 1 in Scotland, and 1 in Australia, have conducted graduate-degree research at Archbold/MAERC (see also Graduate Student Analysis at STABIB, the Station Bibliography). After graduation, some of these scientists (several are now Archbold Research Affiliates) continue their research at Archbold/MAERC and often bring their students for their graduate research. Graduate student research at Archbold/MAERC includes primarily behavior, ecology, evolution, and physiology of terrestrial vertebrates, arthropods, and higher plants. To find a list of graduate theses search STABIB, advanced search, using "all non-indexed fields," for "Master's thesis" and/or "Ph.D. dissertation," and possibly coupled with "Cornell univ." or "univ. Florida" to narrow the search. Graduate students often apply for Archbold support through the Research Internship Program. Staff biologists that are adjunct faculty at several Florida universities train their graduate students at Archbold/MAERC. |
