Long-Term Plant Demography Research
in Archbold Biological Station’s Plant Ecology Lab

A core area of research in our lab is the long-term demographic study of Florida scrub plants. We are investigating the population dynamics, life history, and population viability of 21 species. Our studies go back as far as 1988, on multiple populations, and often on thousands of individuals. The species are mainly federally listed endangered plants that are narrowly endemic to Florida scrub, an ecosystem threatened by habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, and fire suppression. The plants we are studying have a range of habitat preferences and life histories. However, many are short-lived species specializing in open microsites, post-fire environments, or xeric soil conditions. Our research links demography with studies of breeding systems, pollination biology, ecological genetics, seed biology, and land management.

You can click on the table below to learn more about each species’ biology and our long-term demographic work. The species’ accounts are being linked to metadata and (in some cases) available data such as projection matrices, summaries of demographic statistics, and raw demographic data. If you are interested in working with these data, we suggest contacting Eric Menges (emenges@archbold-station.org) for further information.
