RESEARCH ASSISTANT IV or V

We seek a highly motivated research assistant to assist with our water quality research program under the supervision of Dr. Patrick Bohlen at the MacArthur Agro-ecology Research Center (MAERC).

The research assistant will assist with research projects investigating the effects of agricultural practices and water management on water quality and will help maintain and manage long-term monitoring of water quality and meteorological conditions at the Center.  The research projects include shorter-term studies that are funded externally by granting agencies and long-term projects supported by Archbold Biological Station and supplemented by external funds. 

The Research Assistant IV or V will be expected to:

·        With minimal supervision, perform research-related tasks requiring some prior experience or training, and some scientific judgment.

·        Help coordinate activities of research staff and works as part of the water quality research team

·        Collect surface and ground water samples.

·        Manage chain of custodies and communications with analytical labs.

·        Communicate with collaborators at state Universities and agencies.

·        Organize and lead field and laboratory operations.

·        Maintain proper standard operating procedures for sampling and field notebooks.

·        Download data from experimental flumes, groundwater wells and meteorological stations.

·        Help maintain field instrumentation and weather stations.

·        Manage long-term weather data.

·        Supervise other water quality research assistants and research interns.

·        Manage laboratory facilities including inventory and purchases.

·        Maintain laboratory and field equipment in good working condition.

·        Manage, organize and analyze incoming data on multiple projects.

·        Perform occasional literature reviews.

·        Help with other research tasks as needed.

The successful candidate should:

·        Have a B.S or M.S. (preferred) in environmental science or engineering, hydrology, agricultural engineering or related field.

·        Have lab and field experience relevant to the position.

·        Have experience with dataloggers and related field instrumentation.

·        Have experience sampling surface and ground water and analyzing samples for nutrient content.

·        Have experience with data analysis and managing large datasets.

·        Be highly motivated with a strong work ethic.

·        Be able to work independently and with others.

·        Be capable of strenuous fieldwork under hot, humid subtropical conditions. 

·        Be willing to live in a remove rural location.

This is a permanent, full time position with an excellent benefits package.  Starting annual salary will be commensurate with experience and will be a minimum of  $28,000.  MAERC is located at Buck Island Ranch, a full scale, 10,300-acre cattle ranch, managed by Archbold Biological Station on a 30-year lease from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
