TECHNICAL SUPPORT:
A strong and diverse system

Archbold Biological Station is fortunate in having the resources to develop a strong, and diverse, technical support system for the Station’s programs in research, education, and conservation. The Station’s financial and administrative independence, and geographical remoteness from any academic support network, fostered and maintained the early spirit of Richard Archbold’s self-reliance in scientific exploration and research.

Technical support has been part of the Station’s blue-print since its founding in 1941.  The Roebling estate fences, trails, and fire lanes were maintained, and augmented. The climatology data system (1931-1941) was inherited from John Roebling’s engineer and site manager, Alexander Blair, and maintained personally by Richard Archbold. The Library grew from the nucleus of Richard Archbold’s personal scientific library.

As the Station’s residential scientific staff developed during the 1970s and 1980s, the technical support network also developed. The Station has full-time staff managing;

  • the climatology records and weather stations,
  • the computer network,
  • the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) laboratory,
  • the land management program, and
  • the Library and Station scientific and historical archives.
