Environmental and biological monitoring
are essential to provide background data for Station projects. These long-term data sets
are used frequently by both staff and visiting scientists. Some Station datasets (see Climatological Information) go back more than 60 years.
Station staff continue data collection for a variety of long-term projects.
Hydrology and
Limnology. The Station has been collecting various surface and ground water records
since 1982. Surface-water levels for Lake Annie,
the Price Tract on Lake Placid, and at three
sites on the Station’s main property, are recorded weekly. The depth to water table
in 3 wells and surface-water levels in 25 of the Station’s seasonal ponds (since
1989) are recorded twice monthly. In collaboration with Lawrence E. Battoe (St.
Johns Water Management District), surface water chemistry parameters of Lake Annie are
collected (since 1983) weekly for pH and conductivity analysisand monthly for standard
water chemistry parameters.
Plant Studies.
The phenology of over 100 Station plant species is recorded weekly or bimonthly (since
1992). Data recorded include time of flower-budding, flowering, fruiting, and new-leaf
flush. Photo points, (started in 1992), are taken every 5 years at 200 points around the
Station. The second full set, over 800 images, of photo points was photographed during
1997-98 (see photo this page). Additional photos are taken at points in or adjacent to
recent fires up to 2 years postfire.
Coyote Census.
During 1997-98 (Feb. & March), the Station and the Ranch participated in a Coyote
Scent-Station Survey organized by Pat Walsh (Avon Park Air Force Range) to document the
distribution of coyotes in Florida. A commercial attractant, Fatty Acid Scent (FAS) in
disk form is placed in a 1 meter circle, raked smooth to detect tracks. Scent stations
were located 1 mile apart in a grid. Coyotes were recorded in 14 of 19 counties, including
both years at the Ranch, but not on the Station. Recently, coyotes have been heard calling
near the Station.
