The brown hoplo (Hoplosternum littorale) is a non-native, armored catfish (Family Callichthyidae) from eastern South America first detected in Florida about 1995. The first record for Archbold Biological Station was an individual (still alive in captivity, now about 6 inches long, see photo below) captured by Wade Ulrey on 10 September 2004 at the Main Grounds in shallow, post-hurricane floodwaters immediately behind Liatris (4) Cottage. An individual was also captured from the adjacent Reserve of Archbold Expeditions in 2003 by Eva Hohausova. Digital photos by Joe Guthrie.
