The Inventory

The first edition of this aerial photography inventory was compiled by Fred E. Lohrer during April 1982 and existed as a paper copy, with maps showing coverage of each negative, until April 2003 when the inventory was transferred to an Excel file, with the addition of many recent acquisitions, initiated by the need for aerials for the Reserve and the Ranch. The Inventory was published on the Archbold Web site on 1 May 2003, with several revisions during 5-9 May 2003.

Notes

Most aerial photos are stored in the Library; some (35X35) rolled in tubes, some (24X24) in a map case, and some (10X10) in the Station Archives. The FDOT 24X24 and 1992/1993 AeroMaps color 10X10 are stored in the Annex map case.
If 2 copies of 10X10 exist, one copy is a field copy. If 2 copies of 24X24, one copy is at Buck Island Ranch, or ?

Sources of Florida Aerial Photographs

US Government Agencies. Florida aerial photographs before 1958 (1940-1953) are available from the U.S. National Archives, Washington, D.C. <www.archives.gov/research_room.html>. More recent Florida aerial photographs (1958 to current) are available from the U.S.D.A., Aerial Photography Field Office, 222 West 2300 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84119-2020 <www.apfo.usda.gov>.

USDA flights for Highlands County, Florida, include 1940, 1944, 1953, 1958, 1970, 1974, 1981, 1984, 1994, & 1999. Photo mosaic indices are available for 1944-1981 and Archbold has all of these for Highlands County, and for some flights of some surrounding counties. Flights for 1984-1999 are color infrared positives. Images for 1994 and 1999 are digital and are available from the Archbold GIS Lab Manager, Roberta L. Pickert.

1940-44 anomaly. The 1940 flight for our portion of Highlands County is called the Everglades Flight. For the 1944 Highlands County flight, the extreme SE corner of the county was not included in the 1944 Highlands County flight, because it was in the Everglades Drainage District.

Florida Government Agencies. The Florida Department of Transportation <http://www.dot.state.fl.us/ >, State Topographic Office, Tallahassee, has a rich collection of Florida aerials, but they have not been easy to obtain by mail order.

Private Vendors. Continental Aerial Survey, Bartow, Florida, did the Lake Wales Ridge (Ridge) Florida Citrus Flights of 25 & 26 February 1988 and 18 January & 8 February 1990. AeroMap US, Inc., 4 Signal Ave., Ormond Beach, FL 32514, did a special color flight of the Station and the Ranch in 1992 & 1993.

"Florida from the Air" is a 2003 project of the Aerial Photography: Florida collection, University of Florida Libraries. "Florida from the Air" received LSTA funding to digitize U.S. Dept. Agriculture historical Florida aerial photographs flown during 1938-1951. Florida Surveyor's Notes are available from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Web site at LABINS (Land Boundary Information System) > Survey Data > Land Records > GLO (Government Land Organization) but the task is not easy unless you master the land notation system of Range, Township, and Section, and the volume number, page number system of the surveyors. < http://www.labins.org/2003/surveydata/landrecords/glo/index.cfm >.
