Checklist
of Fishes of the Reserve, by

| send e-mail This list includes fishes recorded from the Reserve during 2002-2004 by Eva Hohausova. The classification and nomenclature follow Nelson, J.S., et al. (2004). Fishes were collected by electrofishing (backpack shocker), seining (9.5m seine = ca 30 ft; 3-mm = 0.12-in mesh size), and with a throw-net (diameter 3.67m = 12ft). Nine native species (4 families) and two introduced species are known from the Reserve. This is a sub-set of the 24 species (11 families) of native fishes and hree introduced species recorded from the adjacent Archbold Biological Station (Layne 1999). Fishes were found mainly in artificial ponds, borrow pits, and ditches and in a few natural creeks (natural water bodies are rare in the Reserve compared to number of artificial sites--see map). During the wet season, when surface water overflows these water bodies, fishes were found in the overflow areas. The movement of fishes to nearby or remote locations via these seasonal flood waters is to be expected, and fishes were observed moving from the Reserve into Archbold Biological Station's adjacent West Sections.
