Kye's Skies at Archbold Biological Station:
Light education under dark country skies

While you are at Archbold enjoying the wonders of the Lake Wales Ridge take a little time in the evening to enjoy the wonders over your head. The dark country skies here make it possible to expose students and visiting groups to the universe in real life! Not the digitized, colorized images you can see on the Internet any day. Experience photons from deep space first hand.

Amateur astronomer, Kye Ewing, recently retired from the South Florida Science Museum in West Palm Beach, Florida, has moved to our area. As an Ambassador to the Solar System for NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, Kye was trained to present astronomy programs that make a casual evening under the stars a more meaningful experience. With a mainly recreational focus, allow her to share her enthusiasm for astronomy and space exploration with you and your group, while incorporating some "light" education. Choose from the three areas of interest below, which best suites your group

Constellation Tour | Worlds Compared | The Milky Way | Schedule

1) Constellation Tour - the sky in 3D
A naked-eye tour of the sky. Constellation identification with Greek and Roman myth story telling, the cardinal directions, and distances & colors of the brightest stars. Spaceships overhead! - satellite viewing. Lots of fun for everyone, but this may especially be the best choice for you if your group may have a hard time looking steadily into a telescope eyepiece or if attention to details would be difficult.
2) Worlds Compared
Telescope viewing of planets and the Moon (as is possible). Interplanetary environments compared. High magnification views of Jupiter and Saturn through a 10" diameter telescope, with discussion of Jet Propulsion Lab's many solar system missions. The "inside information" on the Earth-observing Jason/Topex/Poseidon missions. Discoveries from the Galileo Mission to Jupiter and the in-progress Cassini Mission to Saturn.
3) Welcome to the Milky Way!
Binocular and telescope viewing of the Milky Way Galaxy and its neighbors. Supernova remnants, stellar nurseries, galactic artifacts, distant island "universes." This is the one for your group if they can appreciate thinking about what they are seeing as much as actually seeing it. Take a trip with me, tens of millions of years into the past!
