Discovering Florida Scrub Workshop Schedule

October 14-15, 1999

Wednesday, Oct. 13: Optional-Dinner and lodging, and Thursday breakfast available in Archbold facilities for participants who have a long way to travel. Must make arrangements in advance.

 

Thursday, Oct. 14: (Reference notations to Discovering Florida Scrub curriculum in parentheses.)

8:00-8:30 A.M.: Sign-In and Required Pretest. Please arrive as close to 8 A.M. as possible. Donuts and coffee will be available.

8:30-9:00 A.M.: Introduction to Archbold and Discovering Florida Scrub curriculum (DFS Curriculum Goals and Development, How to Use this Book)

9:00-10:15 A.M.: Scrub Hunt with "How and why walk"-exercise in observation skills, questioning and discovery, and collaborative learning. (DFS Intro to Florida Scrub)

10:15 -10:30 A.M.: Bathroom and Water Break.

10:30-11:30 A.M.: Animal Tracks in the Sand-structured outdoor activity from Discovering Florida Scrub curriculum. (DFS I.B.1)

11:30 A.M.-12 noon: Round Table Discussion: Field Trips-the Problems and Possible Solutions (DFS Tips and Scrub Hazards)

12 noon-1: 00 P.M.: Lunch

1:00-2:00 P.M.: Ants and Ant Hills (Mark Deyrup)-informal talk by station researcher on social insects, ant identification and ant communication while taking part in Ants: Strength in Teamwork and Safety in Numbers a structured outdoor activity from Discovering Florida Scrub curriculum. (DFS II.C.1)

2:00-3:00 P.M.: Physical Properties of Sand-indoor investigation by teams of participants into the physics of sand and the interaction between sand and water. (DFS I.A.1,2,3)

3:00-4:00 P.M.: Scrub Plants and Associated Insects Slide Show. (Mark Deyrup)-informal talk by station researcher. (IV.A, B: Animal-Plant Interactions)

4:00-4:30 P.M.: Conservation Education; using the Florida Scrub as a Model Example (Hilary Swain)-informal talk by the Executive Director of Archbold (all)

4:30 P.M.-6:00 P.M.: Free Time (Archbold library, swimming at Lake Annie, jogging, walking, tennis and basketball court available. Inspection of collections upon request.)

Optional -Set live small mammal traps 4:30-5:15 P.M. for experience in trap/mark/release census sampling. (Research in the Florida Scrub) Check and collect traps Friday morning at 8 A.M.

6:00-7:00 P.M.: Dinner

7:00-7:30 P.M.: The Lake Wales Ridge: Islands in Time Video-a 20 minute documentary video filmed at the Archbold Biological Station that discusses the geological history, plants and animals of the Lake Wales Ridge. (Intro to Florida Scrub)

7:30-8:00 P.M.: Make Berlese Funnels and Set Up with Leaf Litter-learn how to make a Berlese funnel and how to use it to find small invertebrates in leaf litter, a structured outdoor activity from Discovering Florida Scrub curriculum. (III.B.1)

8:00-8:30 P.M.: Make Pitfall Traps and Set Out-learn how to make pitfall traps to investigate species diversity and microhabitats, a structured outdoor activity from Discovering Florida Scrub curriculum. (III.B.1)

8:30-8:45 P.M.: Bathroom and Water Break

8:45 P.M.-10:00 P.M.: Optional Night Hike-an hour’s walk in the scrub looking for spider eyes, listening for frog and owl calls, experiencing the use of night vision (flashlights prohibited) and playing a game devised to illustrate firefly communication. (Intro to Florida Scrub, II.B)

 

Friday, October 15:

6:30 A.M.: Breakfast for Birdwatchers.

7:00-8:00 A.M.: Optional Bird Walk (Reed Bowman)-relaxed, early morning walk with station researcher, looking for birds. No experience in bird ID is required but binoculars are recommended. (Intro to Florida Scrub, Research in Florida Scrub)

7:00-8:00 A.M.: Breakfast for Sleepyheads who don’t go on the bird walk.

8:00-9:00 A.M.: Check Traps-small mammal traps (optional), pitfall traps and Berlese funnels. Record, mark and release individuals caught. Look over specimen of species commonly found in traps. (III.B. 1)

9:00-10:30 A.M.: Suburban Scrub Jays (Reed Bowman)-informal talk by station researcher discussing such ecological concepts as behavioral and ecological adaptations, population dynamics, and methods of ecological research. (Intro to Florida Scrub, Research in Florida Scrub)

10:30-10:45 A.M.: Bathroom and Water Break

10:45-11:00 A.M.: Palmettos: Old-timers of the Scrub- begin work on a structured outdoor and indoor activity from Discovering Florida Scrub curriculum. (IV.A.1)

11:00 A.M.-Noon: Fire in Florida Scrub (Kevin Main)-an interactive discussion of prescribed burning by the station land manager. Compare a burned unit of scrub with unburned scrub. Look at plant adaptations found in a habitat dominated by fire. (Fire in Florida Scrub)

Noon-1:00 P.M.: Lunch

1:00-2:00 P.M.: Palmettos: Old-timers of the Scrub-continue work on this activity. Construct a palmetto time line. (IV.A.1)

2:00-3:00 P.M.: Tour of Archbold Research Labs-view the research labs and talk with station researchers, research assistants and interns. (Research in Florida Scrub)

3:00-4:00 P.M.: Wrap-Up and Discussion of Workshop Activities-review the past two days’ activities, take required post test and fill out required evaluation
