FIRST II is a national dissemination project, centered at eight field stations, that provides long-term professional development for natural science faculty.  Focused at biological field stations and marine laboratories, teams of scientists interact in a supportive environment where teaching and learning can be fully integrated into their professional culture.  As part of the National FIRST II project, Archbold has offered a series of faculty workshops (2003-2005) and provided resources to promote student-centered science teaching.  The Archbold FIRST II project has focused on instructional practices (setting learning goals, developing assessments, implementing teaching strategies) that help faculty improve their science teaching, that ultimately improve student learning.

Please note some of our site is still under construction.  Check back often for updated pages.

The FIRST II project will result in widespread dissemination of instructional practices and materials that give faculty the ability to help all students learn science using active learning methods and inquiry.  The Florida regional center is housed at Archbold Biological Station.

Archbold selected teams and faculty based on institutional type and degree of commitment to the project, and geographical distribution.  The four participating institutions are:

Florida Gulf Coast University

Florida International University

University of Central Florida

Valencia Community College
