Archbold Project FIRST
February Workshop: Introducing colleagues

"Faculty workshops in field
ecology at Archbold:
an opportunity to enrich the
teaching of ecology for your
undergraduate students"

Project First at Archbold Biological Station

Introducing colleagues. Time 30 minutes.
We used a variant of a model in Student Active Science (see Bibliography), page 476 to help introduce colleagues

Materials:
  • Note paper

Activity:
  • Each participant reports, within their institutional team group, on one "teaching tip" they used which they thought was an effective example of a teaching approach/teaching strategy. It could be from a specific class, or a departmental approach, or even an institutional approach.
  • They discuss how the teaching tip meets Archbold goals 2-3. Participants concentrate on effective examples that show students how to develop their own answers and investigations, ideally using a project in the field (outside the lab).
  • Participants also address whether this approach tied into any departmental strategy or whether there is institutional support for their approach.
  • Return to the whole group setting.
  • Each person introduces another (one) institutional team member's background and interests then explains the other person's teaching tip (1 minute each)
