Cogon Grass

Cogon grass is one of the few plants at the Station that has been found in the interior portion of scrub habitat.   A patch of cogon grass ca. 1.5 acres in size occurs in Burn Unit 57A.  The complete area was treated two times in 2002 with 3% Roundup, but re-sprouts were observed in March of 2003.  In April of 2003, most of the re-sprouts were treated with 3% Roundup and 1.5% Velpar.   Future projects are planned to test various herbicides combined with mowing and disking in the Reserve.

Large areas of cogon grass exists in the Reserve.  An internship is available to a highly motivated student who would like compare different treatment methods for controlling this highly invasive plant.
