The Spatial Data Library. The creation of a centralized digital spatial library was a major change in accessibility of baseline data. All of Archbold's current spatial data sets (n=18) are included (see Accomplishments 1995-96) , and new spatial information is continuously being added to the GIS library.

Spatially-related Projects in Research, Land Management, Administration, and Education. The core of GIS-trained research assistants has increased dramatically. Over the past 18 months (and into 1997) we have trained one or more persons from each research lab to be responsible for that lab’s spatial analysis. The advent of; easy-to-use advanced desktop mapping software, networking of our GIS-lab computers, and the strong group of GIS-trained scientists have enabled many spatially-related projects (listed below) to proceed simultaneously within the research programs, land-management activities, and administrative responsibilities.

A. Archbold Biological Station
1. Bird Lab

• evaluate foraging habitat choices made by scrub-jays.
• evaluate relationship between habitat characteristics within territories and the nutritional condition of fledgling scrub-jays.
• model areas of scrub-jay productivity.
• investigate the influence of habitat features on demographic parameters of blue jays.

2. Applied Avian Ecology  Lab

• create a habitat quality map to determine the relationships between habitat, residential development, and Florida scrub-jay demography.
  

3. Plant Ecology Lab

• describe and analyze genetic variation in seven federally-endangered plant species of Florida scrub. Spatial analysis was begun of populations sampled for isozymes to provide indices of connectedness, calculate effective population sizes from data on population dynamics and fecundity, and to link spatial data to the other variables of this study.

B. MacArthur Agro-ecology Research Center

• develop physical and cadastral base maps for the Ranch.
• automate radio-telemetry locations for red-shouldered hawks/barred owls for habitat-use study.
• understand habitat use by crested caracaras nesting on the Ranch and surrounding properties.

C. Avon Park Air Force Range

• create initial mapping of territories, cavity trees, and foraging areas of the red-cockaded woodpecker.
• calculate total areas and habitat associations for red-cockaded woodpecker home ranges.

D. Land Management

• develop fire-return intervals for the Station's Fire Management Plan
