 Lake Annie

Guidelines for the use of Lake Annie

  • Access strictly limited to staff, Archbold visitors, and guests. No public. Visitors must sign Archbold’s liability release form.
  • Lake Annie is used primarily for research, monitoring, and education. However staff and visitors are welcome to use the dock, and to swim, row, sail, canoe, picnic, and relax. No recreational scuba diving. Diving for research purposes must be arranged in advance with the Executive Director.
  • You must have explicit Archbold authorization to use Lake Annie for visiting classes or for research. All research protocols are to be reviewed. We request, if possible, that you leave a copy of all Lake Annie data (and associated metadata) collected with the Station.
  • Visitors, visiting classes, boaters and swimmers MUST NOT tie up to, disturb, touch, or even go close to research buoys located at the center of the lake. These instruments are sensitive, precisely anchored and located, and also have instruments deployed underwater.  NEVER lower anchors or weights at the lake center. DO NOT deploy bottom grab dredges at the deep hole (within a 100m radius of the buoy) DO NOT interfere with gauges, wells, or other instruments on the dock or around the lake.
  • Recreational activities and visitor researcher use are entirely at your own risk. You are responsible for your own safety at Lake Annie, and the safety of students and others in your charge. Use all normal safety precautions and be prudent. Do not go out on the lake unless you are knowledgeable about Florida lake conditions, and familiar with the use of boats, canoes, safety equipment etc.  Be especially wary of inclement weather, including lightning, thunderstorms, and high winds. There can be large alligators present.
  • Children aged 12 and under must be under direct adult supervision.
  • No motorized boats or craft allowed except for research purposes by prior arrangement with Executive Director.
  • We do not want to introduce any more exotic plants or animals into Lake Annie. Be scrupulously careful when launching - make sure boats, trailers and trucks are 100% clean. NO live bait, or introducing live specimens.
  • No fishing, except by prior arrangement with the Executive Director. Catch and release only, no live bait, no barbed lures (remove the barbs).
  • Be careful of splinters/nails on dock. No running on dock. Water is too shallow at dock for diving; use discretion.
  • Please take trash and recycling home with you.  Be careful with old BBQ – we have had two gazebo fires already!  No camping. No bonfires.
  • Please report any problems to Archbold 863-465-2571. For emergencies call 911, then 863-414-5142 or 863 414-5140.
