Lucy Anne Collier- Third Generation Floridian "I regret that we didn't preserve more of the scrub on this little piece of property." |

"Let me tell you a little story," Lucy Anne Collier begins. "When I first got married,
we moved into my grandmother's house. There was a scraggy-looking bougainvillea near
the corner of the house. I didn't like it. The first thing we did was to move that shrub
around back, to a shady area. Well you know what happens to bougainvillea in the shade.
I learned a lesson. We should have stayed a year to see the cycle of things before we
changed anything. Instead of rushing in and making judgments. We need to open our eyes
and ears. I'm still learning this lesson."
Lucy Anne is a third generation Floridian. She grew up surrounded by palmetto and pine woods. Her family came to Frostproof and began "grubbing out hills by hand, and using mules to draw water from the lakes to irrigate citrus trees." As a youngster, she remembers going cowhunting. "We would leave the barn before daylight, just as the sun was cracking, and ride our horses through the woods. There were flowers everywhere and wildlife too--turkey, quail, bobcats, coons, and fox. It was just gorgeous. You also learned to understand the harshness of it and how it all works together. I love dead trees. I know it sounds funny. But I know that they are providing shelter and food for wildlife." |

Later in life she and her husband built a home on Lake Reedy. "I regret that we didn't preserve more of the scrub on this little piece of property. Scrub has such beauty. It breaks my heart to see people move here and clear the land. Once the woods are gone you can just hang it up; they will rarely ever come back." Lucy Anne is also a fan of Xeriscape, landscaping with the appropriate native plants for the site. She says, "at different times of the year, scrub has blossoms that are unbelievable. The plants are native so you don't have to do anything--that is my kind of plant. I like the idea of working with what God has already put here." |
