Why Save Species?

A THREE-LEGGED STOOL

Most people want to live in a place with a vibrant community, a vigorous economy and a healthy environment. We generally pursue these goals independently. We sometimes find ourselves saying that to achieve one goal, we must give up another. In the past, some have said jobs must come before the environment.

Today, we know that a successful society is supported by a healthy economy, environment and community. The long- term conservation of the Lake Wales Ridge will succeed only with support of the people who live and work in the area. Economic development is important, but inappropriate development poses a serious threat to the environment and the stability of the community.

Florida Scrub Jay
Dedicated to family life and adapted to living with limited resources, Florida scrub-jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens) live in extended family groups. Adolescent birds help to raise younger siblings by gathering food and guarding the family territory from predators.
Natural areas influence a community's self image and pride. Protected natural areas become centers for community and sites for environmental education, giving the community a sense of history and place. The economic value of environmental land grows over time. Protected conservation areas, in many cases, increase adjacent property values.

Worldwide ecotourism is growing at a rate of 30 percent every year. Although some improvements are required to accommodate public access, conservation sites do not require the same level of costly infrastructure such as roads, sewer systems and utilities that developed urban tracts require.
"We will never be able to demonstrate an immediate, utilitarian
reason for preserving every species on Earth. But who can tell us
which level of extinction will seriously disrupt the web of life that
we depend upon as human beings."
