Overseeding is an agricultural best management practice employed in the midwestern United States, but is relatively unexplored in Florida. Overseeding management entails planting cover crops directly into pastureland. At Buck Island Ranch (BIR), overseeding is being investigated for its potential to improve soil health, water quality, forage, and biodiversity in bahiagrass pastures. Overseeded species tested at BIR included: Crimson clover, Daikon radish, Forage turnips, Rye 104, Triticale, Wheat, Oats, and Hairy Vetch. In this study, I explored factors that were hypothesized to limit the success of overseeded species such as competition and herbivory. This project aims to address these questions: Does bahiagrass outcompete overseeded species? Does wildlife herbivory hinder the growth and establishment of overseeded species? Furthermore, if overseeded species can establish successfully, are they effective at improving soil health and water quality?
