Join us for a talk by Professor Matthew E. Smith from the University of Florida. Dr. Smith, an expert in fungal ecology, will focus on the biodiversity and biogeography of fungi in the Nothofagaceae forests of southern South America, highlighting the unique role of local bird species in fungal dispersal.
Dr. Matthew Smith is an associate professor in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Florida, and he also serves as the curator of the Fungarium (fungal collection) at the Florida Museum of Natural History. He is responsible for identifying unknown fungi for a variety of Florida stakeholders, including the UF Plant Disease Clinic, UF/IFAS Extension and the UF College of Veterinary Medicine. His research focuses on fungal ecology, evolution, and systematics, and he has worked extensively on truffles and ectomycorrhizal fungi.
